Kogi NECO Exam Attack: Principal, Exam Supervisor & 2 Students Rescued 2 Days After Abduction

Post:

Another school attack, another rescue.

Gunmen attacked an examination centre in Olowa, Dekina LGA, Kogi State during the ongoing 2026 NECO Senior School Certificate Examination.

What happened

On Tuesday, armed men stormed Government Secondary School, Olowa — an unauthorised exam centre.
5 people were abducted:

  1. The school principal
  2. A NECO exam supervisor
  3. 3 students/candidates

The attack raised fresh fears about security at exam centres, especially after a similar attack earlier this year at Government Secondary School, Iluke in Ijumu LGA.

How the rescue happened

A joint team of Nigerian Army, DSS, Police, NSCDC, local vigilantes and hunters launched a rescue operation following Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s directive.

Result: 4 victims rescued safely.
The Kogi State Government confirmed the school principal, the NECO official and 2 students have been rescued.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, they are “hale and hearty” and are currently with security agencies for debriefing and medical checks.

The victims were received by Governor Ododo at Government House, Lokoja. Heads of security agencies were present.

Fanwo thanked President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to give Kogi “every necessary support”.

What’s next

Police say the operation is not over. Efforts are ongoing to identify, track, arrest and prosecute everyone responsible for the attack.

NECO has also come under criticism. The council denied claims that the school was a “miracle centre” and urged stakeholders to verify information before making public statements.

Why this matters

With WAEC and NECO ongoing, parents and students are scared. Schools in rural areas are becoming targets.

The Kogi government says it will continue to invest in intelligence, logistics and inter-agency collaboration to keep the state safe.

Thank God for the rescue 🙏
But we need long-term solutions. No child should fear going to write exams.
