FUTO students are crying out again.
Heavy rain that started yesterday has left Eziobodo community around Federal University of Technology Owerri completely flooded. From Ihiagwa junction down to the student hostels, the water don rise pass ankle level.
What’s happening right now
- Roads are blocked – Bikes and keke cannot pass. Students trekking through flood water to reach school.
- Hostels affected – Some off-campus hostels in Eziobodo and Obinze have water inside rooms. Mattresses and properties damaged.
- Lectures disrupted – Many students in 100L and 200L hostels couldn’t make it to morning lectures.
- Power issues – EEDC cut light in some areas to avoid electrocution.
A 300L student who stays in Eziobodo told me:
“Bro, we wake up and see water for parlor. We dey carry our things go upstairs. This flood dey happen every year but this 2026 own too much.”
Why Eziobodo floods every year
Eziobodo is a lowland area. When rain falls heavily, drainage is bad and water has nowhere to go. NIHSA already listed Imo State as one of the 33 states at high flood risk for 2026. Peak season is July – September.
What students should do now
- Don’t wade through flood water with shoes or barefoot – exposed wires dey everywhere
- Keep important documents and gadgets in nylon/waterproof bags
- Boil your drinking water – flood can contaminate boreholes
- Follow SUG and FUTO notices for updates
- If your hostel is badly hit, report to your landlord and SUG welfare
SUG Response
As of now, SUG hasn’t released an official statement. Students are calling on school management and Imo State government to send relief and clear the drainages before it gets worse.
